Clinical Seminar groups

Johannesburg has four, and Cape Town three, Clinical Seminar groups. These groups meet once a month on a Saturday and are facilitated by a SAPA psychoanalyst. A case is discussed over a three-month period. In the first of the three months the analyst discusses how she or he works. In the second and third month a group member presents a case. An additional group, which will always meet remotely, is about to start, with members from across and outside South Africa.

ITTA groups

Johannesburg has three, and Cape Town two, Inter-generational Transfer of the Trauma of Apartheid (ITTA) groups which meet monthly at least nine times a year and discuss race issues in a thematic or free associative way. Each group has a permanent facilitator.

Low Fee Services

There are two established Low Fee Services (LFS) in Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively. Members meet to discuss the clinical implications and challenges arising specifically from working in no-fee and low-fee settings and to expand and develop these services.

Intercity Community Groups

Community groups are facilitated by senior psychotherapists in a monthly case-discussion format. The rationale behind the community groups is to support intern and community service psychologists/therapists in their work, introduce them to professional organisation culture and apply a psychoanalytical lens to their clinical work in the public service.
